Wiregrass Health Information Technology program achieves accreditation

October 17, 2012

Valdosta, GA: Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s Health Information Technology program was reviewed and accepted for accreditation status. The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) voted at their September 13 meeting to approve the accreditation status of the program. CAHIIM accredits associate and baccalaureate degree programs in health information management, and masters’ degree programs in the health informatics and health information management professions in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Wiregrass Health Information program was reviewed by the Panel of Accreditation Reviewers and the CAHIIM Commissioners, and met or exceeded the minimum Accreditation Standards as set by the CAHIIM. According to CAHIIM “the commission recognizes the commitment of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College to continuous quality improvement in higher education, as was demonstrated through the accreditation process.”

The process for accreditation began under the direction of the Health Information Program Coordinator Susan Jackson and included the assistance of the program advisory board, the dean of allied health, online instruction director, recent graduates of the program, and current students. “This is the "gold standard" accreditation for HIT and allows our program graduates to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam,” stated Dr. Ray Perren, president of Wiregrass. “This process involved several years of work. Susan Jackson did a tremendous job in leading our college through this entire process.”

Program accreditation through CAHIIM creates the opportunity for program graduates to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician exam and gain national certification in the field. The certification increases the graduate’s marketability in the industry for employment. For more information on the Health Information Technology Program visit www.wiregras.edu.
