Valdosta, GA— William Gerald Wilkerson, optical program coordinator for Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, was awarded the 2012 Optician of the Year award from the Opticians Association of Georgia at their recent conference held in Valdosta. Wilkerson is the program coordinator for the Wiregrass optical program, serves on the Board of Directors for the Optical Association of Georgia, and was appointed the Continuing Education Chairman for the Association. In 2011, he was awarded the President’s Award for his outstanding work on the board. Wilkerson has been a licensed optician since 1999.

“I am truly humbled and honored to have been awarded Optician of the Year 2012 for the State of Georgia. It is gratifying to know that my efforts to improve the quality of both education and continuing education on behalf of the Opticianry profession in the great State of Georgia did not go unnoticed,” stated Wilkerson. “I have been blessed with outstanding support and advice from the leadership of the Optician’s Association of Georgia, my fellow Opticians, and the leadership here at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.”

The Optical Association of Georgia is a professional group representing opticians, and contact lens technicians employed in Georgia. The mission of the group is to maintain high standards of practice within the profession to protect the health and welfare of the public.
