Ray Perren, president of Wiregrass Georgia Tech, tests the new simulator while at an education fair for veterans.
Valdosta, GA— Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s automotive collision repair programs is among the first in the state to begin using a new paint simulator system in training students to become collision repair technicians. The program recently acquired two new SimSpray™ Paint simulators. Students are able to learn on the new training system and accelerate the learning of fundamental spray painting skills. The simulator produces a realistic experience in which students can reproduce the body positioning and muscle and joint movements required to create the ideal mil thickness on a finished piece. During traditional training, students need to select, move, and mount a part before they practice painting. With SimSpray™, students' hands-on practice time significantly increases since a few taps on a touch screen monitor are all that’s required to begin another practice session. When coupled with professional instruction, the ability to continually repeat tasks enables students using the simulator to become more proficient painters in a shorter period of time.
This technology is not only going to increase the skill of the student in a much faster time, but it is also cool. The simulator is created very similar to a video game and is attractive to teens and young adults. It’s hard to resist wanting to put on the helmet and try your hand at painting. With this new technology and more on the way, the automotive collision program is becoming a more attractive program for many who may not have ever considered it before.
Another great benefit to the simulator is the reduced contact with hazardous materials while a student is still training. Students are able to become better skilled at painting prior to being put in a paint booth and exposed to the chemicals in paint mixtures. In addition, using a simulator lets the instructors work with students on safety procedures repeatedly prior to being put into a live situation.
The Wiregrass Automotive Collision program offers a diploma and technical certificate for students interested. Fall semester classes begin August 22 and new student applications are currently being accepted.
