Valdosta, GA— Valdosta High School and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College held the second annual Career Tech Camp the week of June 4. Students from Valdosta High School signed up to participate in the week-long camp that exposed them to various career paths offered at the college. Fifteen students spent the week rotating through programs like electrical systems technology, drafting technology, criminal justice, horticulture, cosmetology, and clinical lab technology. In each of the program areas, the students were given the chance to participate in a class project that demonstrated some of the skills that would be mastered through the program. The students built their own lamp in electrical systems and created a potted arrangement in horticulture to take home.
In addition to the hands-on activities, students spent one morning visiting the industrial park for a tour of Regal Marine and the American Second Harvest Food Bank. The last day of camp, each student was able to choose a program they were interested in to shadow for several hours. This gave them a chance to sit in on a college class and experience the level of instruction they will soon encounter as they graduate high school and enter the college of their choice.
The Valdosta High School students who participated in the camp were Cameron Armstrong, John Haddin, Ashley Howell, Haylee Johnson, Ariel Lane, Andrew Petersen, Sarah Petersen, Porsha Robertson, Michelle Spencer, Diamond Steele, Kenneth Taylor, Kenyanna Taylor, Torri Thomas, Shekierra Williams, and Raekwon Wilson.
