Valdosta, GA: Governor Nathan Deal proclaimed that October 29 through November 2 was Careers in Construction Week for the state of Georgia. This comes as the state wide program Go Build Georgia is actively working to increase the awareness of future labor demand trends in the construction related industries. State wide construction industry labor statistics are forecasting a shortage of qualified applicants for the 16,000 plus jobs that are expected to be available over the next few years. This shortage of workers is being created by an aging workforce that is retiring, and a lack of skilled laborers to replace them.

In response to this forecasted trend and local industry requests, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College has sought approval for several new programs in related fields. A Commercial Construction Management Associate Degree program has been approved by the state board of the Technical College System of Georgia and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools which accredits Wiregrass’s programs. This new two year associate degree in commercial construction management will prepare students for positions such as general contractors, or project managers. Students will learn to coordinate and supervise a wide variety of construction projects including the building of all types of commercial, and industrial structures, roads, bridges, power plants, schools, and hospitals. The Commercial Construction Management Associate Degree will be offered on the Valdosta Campus.

In addition, Wiregrass will begin offering a new Associate Degree in Air Conditioning Technology on the Coffee and Valdosta Campus locations. The Air Conditioning Technology program has been a long standing program of high demand on both campuses. The addition of the associate degree will further increase the employability of those entering that field.

A Technical Certificate for Land Surveying Technicians is being introduced on the Valdosta Campus for Spring Semester. The program will consist of four classes held over three semesters in the evenings. The courses include Safety, Foundations of Math, Forrest Surveying and Mapping, and GPS/GIS Arial photography. Students will have hands-on and classroom instruction on surveying and mapping methods, deed search and tract locations, Global Positioning Systems, and Geographical information Systems.

New student applications are being accepted now for Spring Semester. Those interested in the Land Surveying Technician Certificate may contact Kerry Watts at 229-249-2662.
