This year’s event was dedicated to Harry Mixon for his years of service and support to the college.
Fitzgerald, GA - Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation North held its 28th annual meeting on November 12 at the Charles Harris Learning Center on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus. Almost 250 guests filled the banquet room decorated in a Christmas theme. Entertainment for the evening was provided by the “The Return”, a Beatles tribute band.
The annual event is hosted by the Foundation to honor supporters of the college and the Foundation. This year’s event was dedicated to a man many consider to be one of the founding fathers of the college, Mr. Harry Mixon. To say Harry loved the college would be an understatement. When what was first known as Ben Hill-Irwin Tech was being discussed Harry began carrying the torch for its inception. His service in the state legislature at the time was a perfect vehicle for him to campaign for the college. There were many obstacles and objections to overcome including where would the money come from for such a large project. Like a true champion, Harry tore down the obstacles, answered the objections, and found the money. Harry, along with many other hard working individuals, made the idea of a local college become a reality.Gary Evans of Southwire accepts the Heritage Award for Outstanding Support of the Foundation.
The Wiregrass Foundation North honored several individuals and received a generous donation from a local organization. Satilla Rural Electric Membership Corporation, through its Round Up Program, made a $5,000 dollar donation to the Foundation. The donation will be used to provide scholarships to students on the Coffee campus.
The annual Heritage Award was announced. This award is the highest award given by the Foundation and goes to an individual or company who has shown outstanding support to the Foundation. The 2013 Heritage Award was presented to Southwire of Douglas. This industry has stepped forward and helped out the Foundation in many ways including, supplementing the GED Program. This industry was named by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of the best places to work in Georgia, and also received the Governor’s Manufacturer of the Year Award for 2013.
The Friend of the Year award is presented to an individual or individuals who have shown outstanding support to the college through their time, expertise, friendship, and support in many areas. This year Wyndall Walters was awarded the 2013 Friend of the Year Award. Wyndall’s positive attitude and time commitment during the recent changes at Wiregrass have helped to guide the Foundation and trustees on a straight and rewarding path. As Chairman of the Foundation, his dedication to the college and the Foundation went above and beyond the call of duty.
The Foundation awarded the 2013 Alum of the Year Award to Stacie Mims, Interim CEO of Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center. Mims graduated from Ben Hill-Irwin Tech as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1988 and continued her education earning an Associate Degree in Nursing, a Bachelors, and Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration. She taught as an adjunct instructor at the college from 1994 to 2005. She was a very strong clinical instructor, making sure that students not only performed their assigned clinical duties, but that they also extended the classroom learning at the clinical setting. The passion she has for nursing was clearly seen.
Individuals interested in contributing to the Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation North may do so in many ways. Donors may consider establishing a student scholarship designated to a specific program, group of students, or demographic, or give a one-time monetary donation. Name a classroom, volunteer your time, or orchestrate a new project; in the end, your gift, small or large, creates a future for a student who could one day make a difference in the community.
