Wiregrass Optical Student Awarded Grant to Attend Leadership Conference

Valdosta, GA— Wiregrass Opticianry student Matthew Priest will get to attend a leadership conference in his field of study as the only student representative from the state of Georgia. Matthew was awarded a travel grant from the Opticians Association of America’s (OAA) Board of Directors to attend the Annual State Conference in January in Louisiana.

The OAA Board of Directors awarded $20,000 in travel grants to students and apprentices from all over the country. Matthew was the only student from Georgia to be chosen. He will attend the OAA 29th Annual Leadership Conference January 16 -18 in New Orleans where he will participate in seminars and breakout sessions addressing legislative affairs, communication synergy, and leadership skills. The conference will allow Matthew the chance to meet with leaders in the field of Opticianry and network for future career opportunities. When asked about this opportunity he stated “I am very excited to be able to attend this conference. My career goals include opening up my own business so this is a chance for me to learn from the best in the field and hopefully make contact with individuals who can mentor me as I continue my education and work toward my goals.”

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College offers diploma program in Opticianry, a technical certificate in Refractometry, and a technical certificate in Eyewear Dispensing. Class for Spring Semester begin January 7 and new student applications are now being accepted.
