Wiregrass Tech’s GOAL Student Named Top State Finalist

Valdosta – Sandra Sheppard, a Business Administrative Technology student at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, was named one of the top nine finalists in the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) in Atlanta last week.

The announcement was made at the Technical College System of Georgia’s GOAL and Rick Perkins Award Conference held in Atlanta April 24-25. Sheppard was one of twenty-six students from across the state of Georgia’s Technical Colleges named as a finalist. Each college winner competed in the regional interviews in February to determine who would be the three to represent each region. After being named one of the finalist Sheppard along with the other finalists were interviewed by another panel of judges from across the state. AAmir Greene of Albany Technical College was named the 2013 state GOAL winner and the recipient of the new car awarded by Chevrolet, the statewide corporate sponsor of the GOAL program.

GOAL, a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia, honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state’s technical college students. Local GOAL winners are selected at each of the state’s 25 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regents college with a technical education division.

Sheppard received a trophy for being named as one of the top finalist along with an iPad, and a $26,000 scholarship to DeVry University.

When asked about her experience at the annual GOAL and Rick Perkins Award conference in Atlanta and being named a top finalist, here’s what Sheppard had to share, “Last week's GOAL/Rick Perkins celebration was such an awesome opportunity! Mere words cannot express the excitement I felt being in the company of Georgia’s “Best of The Best” students and instructors. I am so thankful for all the lasting relationships established through this experience and the magnitude of encouragement and support shown by everyone made this prestigious event, unforgettable. I am overjoyed and feel truly blessed to have been selected as one the Regional Finalist and I will continue to share the good news about Technical Education. I am forever grateful to my Wiregrass family and I am honored to have had the opportunity to represent Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.“

Sandra is from Ocilla, Georgia and attends the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.
