Valdosta, GA— Wiregrass Georgia Technical College dental hygiene students on the Valdosta Campus received their pins during a ceremony May 2, 2014. These 11 students are part of a cooperative program agreement with Valdosta State University. Students complete core requirement courses at VSU and then five semesters of clinical training at Wiregrass in the dental clinic.

“The pins presented represent the honor of a school, the honor of a profession, and the honor of each person who wears the pin. The presentation of the pin celebrates the students' transition from a student hygienist to a dental hygiene professional” stated Sandi Woodward, director of Dental Programs for Wiregrass Georgia Tech.

The students will participate in the Valdosta State University commencement exercises on May 10 where they will be awarded their AAS degrees in Dental Hygiene.

Students receiving their pin include Shelby Ogden of Jesup, Melanie Reynolds of Douglas, Alexandria Harrod of Moultrie, Jennifer Burgess of Valdosta, Nicole Van Cleve of Thomasville, Traci Holcomb of Fort Worth, Texas, Shannon Grady of Blackshear, Brandi Pearce of Valdosta, Margaret McDonald of Hahira, Heather Edwards of Valdosta, and Julia Heying of St. Simons Island.

During the ceremony several students were recognized. Shelby Ogden received the S.T.A.R. Award. The Colgate Oral Health Advisor STAR Award is given to a student who demonstrates true dedication to the profession, exhibits extraordinary compassion in patient care, displays enthusiasm and follow-through for community service and demonstrates outstanding patient education and motivation skills. The Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award is presented by the faculty to a student who demonstrates remarkable clinical skills and talent over the course of their clinical experience and this was awarded to Brandi Pearce. The last award given was the Academic Award and it went to the student who had the highest overall GPA for all dental hygiene courses and the recipient was Shelby Ogden.
