Valdosta, GA – Atkinson County High School students dually enrolled with Wiregrass Georgia Tech were surprised last week with a letter from author Dave Pelzer. During Fall Semester, the criminal justice specialist class read the book, "A Child Called It." This book details the horrific case of child abuse that the author Dave Pelzer went through and survived. The students kept journals while reading the book. After completing the book, they each wrote the author a letter and let him know how much the book impacted them. “I read each letter before we mailed them and you could tell that the book truly touched each student in some way,” stated Patsy Rivera, Criminal Justice Instructor.

Mrs. Rivera was notified in December that the author had received the letters and that Mr. Pelzer read each letter personally and would be responding soon to the class. The students were surprised last week when Mrs. Rivera presented them with the letter. “Seeing the students react when they found how the author had replied to them was great,” stated Rivera.
