Fitzgerald, GA – Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is proud to announce a generous $25,000 donation from Community Bank Company of Fitzgerald to the Wiregrass Tech Foundation North. This contribution will support the launch of the college’s new Electrical Lineworker Certificate Program, set to begin Fall Semester 2025 on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus.

The program is designed to prepare students for high-demand careers in the electric utility industry. With companies like Georgia Power projecting the need to hire approximately 170 lineworkers annually over the next three to five years, this program meets a critical workforce development need both locally and across the state.

“Community Banking Company is excited to partner with Wiregrass in supporting the newly announced lineman program. Due to recent weather events, we have all personally experienced how valuable well-trained lineman crews are to our local community. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College's commitment will ensure that our energy providers will continue to provide an exceptional level of service as in the past,” shared President/CEO of Community Banking Company J. Corey Gibbs.

In just 7 ½ weeks, students will gain hands-on training in lineworker organization, automation, safety, and occupational practices, all aligned with current industry standards. The short-term certificate is structured to fast-track students into careers by equipping them with the essential skills to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, including both overhead and underground utility lines.

“The support from Community Bank Company of Fitzgerald allows us to offer this vital training program right here in our community,” shared Wiregrass President Dr. DeAnnia Clements. “This partnership not only helps build a stronger workforce but also creates life-changing opportunities for our students. We’re excited to meet the growing demand for skilled lineworkers in South Georgia.”

The Electrical Lineworker Program offers a unique local opportunity, especially significant considering the nearest similar program is more than 90 minutes away. Graduates will be well-positioned for employment with Georgia Power and multiple EMCs within the Wiregrass service area.

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is currently enrolling students for Summer Express Term with classes beginning May 28. The new lineworker program will begin Fall Semester, with classes starting August 12. Interested individuals can apply online now at Wiregrass.edu.
