Fitzgerald, GA – Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is pleased to announce a generous $5,000 donation from Satilla REMC to the Wiregrass Tech Foundation North in support of the college’s new Electrical Lineworker Certificate Program, which launched Fall Semester 2025 on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus.
This financial contribution helps power a program designed to prepare students for high-demand careers in the electric utility industry. With companies like Georgia Power estimating the need to hire approximately 170 new lineworkers each year for the next three to five years, this program meets a vital workforce development need locally and across the state.
“We are thrilled to partner with Wiregrass to help bring this program to South Georgia. I believe Hurricane Helene showed us all how important linemen are to our communities. This will be a great opportunity for individuals to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in the electrical utility industry. We look forward to the positive impact this program makes on the workforce in our area!” shared Satilla REMC Public Relations Coordinator Matt Parker.
Students enrolled in the new program will receive hands-on training in lineworker organization, automation, safety, and occupational practices; all aligned with current industry standards. The short-term certificate is designed to fast-track students into the workforce, equipping them with the essential skills needed to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, including both overhead and underground utility lines.
“At Wiregrass, we are committed to offering programs that lead directly to meaningful careers,” shared DeAnnia Clements, President of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. “The support from Satilla REMC not only helps us launch this high-impact program, but also reinforces our shared mission to meet workforce needs and provide opportunities that change lives, right here in South Georgia.”
The Electrical Lineworker Program offers a unique local opportunity for students, especially given that the nearest similar program is more than 90 minutes away. Graduates will be well-positioned for employment with Georgia Power and various EMCs throughout the Wiregrass service area.
