Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welder - OSM1 Technical Certificate of Credit

The Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welder Technical Certificate of Credit is a continuation of the basic certificate. The Advanced program provides instruction in shielded metal arc welding in the overhead, horizontal, and vertical positions.

Requirements:

  • Submit a completed application and application fee
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Submit official high school transcript or High School Equivalency transcript
  • Submit official college transcripts, if applicable
  • Present acceptable SAT or ACT scores taken within the last 60 months, or acceptable COMPASS or ASSET scores taken within the last 60 months. Documentation on a college transcript of successful completion of appropriate courses from a regionally accredited college or university may be accepted in lieu of test scores.

Weekly Contact Hours: Lecture - 3 Lab 2 - 0 Lab 3 - 3 Pre-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Co-requisite(s): None Introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in the horizontal position. Qualification tests, horizontal position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: horizontal SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes, selection and applications for horizontal SMAW, horizontal SMAW joints, and horizontal SMAW to specification.
