Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welder, TCC (OSM1) Technical Certificate of Credit
The Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welder Technical Certificate of Credit is a continuation of the basic certificate. The advanced program provides instruction in shielded metal arc welding in the overhead, horizontal, and vertical positions.
This program qualifies for the HOPE Career Grant.
Program Outcomes: This program will equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform shielded metal arc welding in overhead, horizontal, and vertical positions.
Careers: Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers; Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Length of Program: 1 Term
Admission Requirements:
- General College Admissions and Placement
- This program does NOT require a HS diploma or GED
- Potential applicants who do not have a high school diploma or equivalent must document at least two (2) years of successful performance within a specific field by completing and submitting the Experience Worker Certification Form to documents@wiregrass.edu

Weekly Contact Hours: Lecture - 3 Lab 2 - 0 Lab 3 - 3 Pre-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Co-requisite(s): None Introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in the horizontal position. Qualification tests, horizontal position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: horizontal SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes, selection and applications for horizontal SMAW, horizontal SMAW joints, and horizontal SMAW to specification. |
