Basic Machining Operator, TCC (BMO1)  Technical Certificate of Credit

The Basic Machining Operator certificate prepares students for entry level machine shop employment by providing the knowledge and skills in basic machining operations. Instruction is provided in blueprint reading, lathe, mill, and surface grinder operation, mathematical functions, and an introduction to the machine tool industry.

This program qualifies for the HOPE Career Grant.

Program Outcomes: The graduate will acquire skills to read and interpret blueprints for machine tool applications effectively. They will also gain proficiency in performing surface grinding, lathe operations, and mill operations. Furthermore, graduates will develop competencies in basic and advanced algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric mathematical operations. Additionally, they will be equipped to evaluate fundamental concepts and procedures relevant to machine tool operations.

Weekly Contact Hours: Lecture - 2 Lab 2 - 4 Lab 3 - 0 Pre-requisite(s): None Co-requisite(s): None Introduces the fundamental concepts and procedures necessary for the safe and efficient use of basic machine tools. Topics include: machine shop safety, terminology, use of hand and bench tools, analysis of measurements, part layout, horizontal and vertical band saw setup and operation, drill press setup and operation, and quality control.

Weekly Contact Hours: Lecture - 3 Lab 2 - 0 Lab 3 - 0 Pre-requisite(s): None Co-requisite(s): None Introduces the fundamental concepts necessary to develop blueprint reading competencies, interpret drawings, and produce sketches for machine tool applications. Topics include interpretation of blueprints, sketching, sectioning, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and assembly drawings.

Emphasis is placed on the use of machining formulas by incorporating algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric functions. Topics include machining algebra and geometry, applied geometry, and applied trigonometry.

Introduces the properties of various metals, production methods, and identification of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Topics include: heat treatment safety, metallurgy principles, heat treatment of metals, surface grinders, surface grinder maintenance, surface grinder setup, surface grinder operations, and safety.

Topics include: safety, lathes parts and controls, lathe tooling and tool bit grinding, lathe calculations, lathe setup and operations.
